IGC Welcome pack

Visa Requirements

If you are from a non-EU country, you could require a visa to travel to Portugal. The EU has a common list of countries whose citizens must have a visa when crossing the external borders and those whose nationals are exempt from that requirement. You should apply for the visa at a Portuguese Embassy or Consulate of your area of residence around 3 months before your stay at the IGC or the beginning of your contract. The Scientific Events Management & Welcome Team will provide you with a letter stating that you will start working at the Institute (Letter in Portuguese and translation in English signed by the IGC Director).

Obtain a Portuguese Taxpayer number

This is mandatory as you will need a tax number for many purposes: opening a bank account, social security registration, renting an apartment, etc. A visit to the tax office in Oeiras will be set up for you by a member of the Scievents&Welcome team as soon as you arrive at the IGC.

Obtain a Social security number

All individuals registered for social security coverage are also covered for healthcare in Portugal. As from March 2012, a special agreement has been created between the IGC and the Portuguese National Social Security for the Voluntary Social Security Scheme only. This agreement has been set up to facilitate the process of obtaining a social security number removing the need to commute to any social security office.
